There is a funny thing that happens when water pressure drops at a single tap. Most people assume something has gone wrong with the mains, or that there is a leak somewhere in the wall, and the mind starts running through worst case scenarios. But nine times out of ten, when it is just one tap acting up while everything else in the house is fine, the problem is sitting right at the end of your nose. Literally. It is the aerator, and it is one of the most overlooked little parts in your whole house.
What an Aerator Actually Does
That small mesh screen screwed onto the tip of your tap is called an aerator. Its job is to mix air into the water stream, which softens the flow, reduces splashing, and saves water without you even noticing. It is a clever little thing.
The problem is that because it sits right at the point where water exits the tap, it catches everything the water carries with it. Sediment, mineral deposits, fine grit. Over time, that build up restricts the flow, and what started as a strong stream gradually becomes a trickle. The tap itself is fine. The pipes are fine. It is just that tiny screen doing its job a little too well.
In our part of the world around Sunraysia, this is especially common. The water here is on the harder side, which means higher mineral content. Calcium and magnesium in particular tend to leave deposits on anything they touch, and the aerator copping the full force of every litre that runs through that tap is always going to be one of the first things to show it.
How to Tell If the Aerator Is the Problem
The clearest sign is exactly what the social post described. Low pressure at one tap while every other tap in the house runs normally. If your pressure was a mains issue or a leak further back in the line, you would expect it to affect more than just the one outlet.
You might also notice the flow pattern changing before the pressure drops noticeably. Instead of a clean stream, the water starts to spray in odd directions, or comes out in an uneven pattern. That is the sediment starting to block parts of the mesh while leaving others open. It looks like the tap is broken when it really is not.
Sometimes the build up happens slowly enough that people do not notice it until the flow is quite restricted. It sneaks up on you. A tap that used to fill the sink in thirty seconds now takes a minute and a half, and at some point you start to wonder if something is wrong with the house.
What to Do About It
This is one of the few things around the house where having a look yourself first makes sense. Unscrew the aerator from the end of the tap spout, which usually just means turning it by hand or with a cloth for grip. Be careful not to lose the small rubber washer inside, because that seals the connection.
Once you have it off, hold it up to the light. You will often be able to see the mineral scale or sediment caked into the mesh. Rinse it under water, and if the build up is significant, let it sit in a cup of white vinegar for twenty minutes or so. That dissolves the mineral deposits without damaging the mesh.
Screw it back on, turn the tap on, and see what happens. In a lot of cases the flow comes back strong and that is the end of it. Simple as that.
If the aerator is visibly corroded, the mesh is damaged, or the flow is still poor after a clean, it is time to replace it. They are small and inexpensive, but you do want to make sure you get the right size and thread for your particular tap. This is where it can start to get fiddly, especially on older or imported tapware where parts are not always straightforward to match up.
When to Call a Plumber Instead
If the aerator checks out fine and the pressure is still low at that one outlet, the problem is somewhere further upstream. It could be a partially closed isolation valve under the sink, a failing ceramic cartridge inside the tap itself, or in older properties, a section of pipe that has corroded or scaled up internally. Those are not aerator jobs anymore.
The isolation valve is worth checking first. It is the small tap under the sink that controls water to that outlet. Sometimes these get knocked or turned during cleaning or renovation work and end up only partially open. Worth a look before anything else.
If that is fine and the pressure is still not right, it is worth getting a plumber in to diagnose it properly. The fix is usually straightforward once the cause is identified, and catching a failing tap component early is always cheaper than dealing with it after it has caused a leak or failed completely.

Start with the simplest possible explanation, which in this case is almost always the aerator, and work outward from there. Most of the time you will not need to go very far.
A Note on Sunraysia Water Quality
Our water across the region comes from the Murray River system and is treated to meet safe drinking standards, but it does carry a higher mineral load than rainfall fed systems in wetter parts of the country. That is just the nature of an inland river system.
What that means practically is that mineral scale is a fact of life for anyone living in the Sunraysia district. Aerators, shower heads, and the inside of kettles and hot water systems all feel the effects. It is worth building a quick check of your aerators into your routine, maybe once a year, and giving them a clean or replacing them when they start to restrict flow. It is cheap maintenance that keeps your taps working the way they should and saves a fair bit of water over time without any effort once it is done.
If you are finding scale is building up quickly across multiple taps and appliances, it might also be worth a conversation about whether a water softening or filtration solution makes sense for your property. That is a bigger conversation depending on your setup, but it is one worth having if the scale is causing ongoing issues.
Most of the time though, a blocked aerator is a five minute fix. Check it first and you might be pleasantly surprised.
