Low water pressure is one of those problems that starts as a minor annoyance and slowly takes over your day. A shower that trickles, a tap that takes forever to fill a pot, a hose that barely reaches the back fence. In Mildura and the Greater Sunraysia region there are a handful of causes that come up again and again, and most of them have a clear fix.

This guide walks through the most common reasons for low water pressure in Mildura homes and what to do about each one.

Is the low pressure just at one tap or throughout the whole house?

The first thing to work out is whether the pressure is low everywhere or only at a single fixture. This tells you a lot about where the problem sits.

Only at one tap or showerhead: The issue is almost certainly the fixture itself. Aerators (the small mesh screen at the tip of a tap) and showerheads block up with mineral deposits over time. In Mildura's hard water this happens faster than in most parts of Australia. Unscrew the aerator or showerhead, soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse it, and reinstall. This fixes the problem more often than not.

Throughout the whole house: This points to a system issue. The most likely causes are a failing pressure reducing valve, a partially closed isolation valve, a hidden water leak, or a temporary issue with supply from Lower Murray Water.

The pressure reducing valve: the most common culprit

Most homes in Mildura have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed on the main water supply line, usually near the water meter or where the supply enters the house. Its job is to reduce the mains pressure to a safe level inside your home, typically around 500 kPa.

PRVs have a lifespan of roughly 8 to 15 years. When they start to fail they can either drop pressure too low or let pressure run too high. A failing PRV is one of the most common causes of whole-house low pressure Brad sees in established Mildura homes.

Replacing a PRV requires a licensed plumber. It is not a DIY job under NSW/Victorian plumbing regulations. Brad can test your pressure with a gauge and confirm whether the PRV is the cause before replacing anything.

Quick check: If you have a pressure gauge, test at the outdoor tap closest to your meter. Normal residential pressure sits between 200 and 500 kPa. Below 150 kPa is considered low and warrants investigation.

How Mildura's hard water affects pressure

The Sunraysia region has some of the hardest tap water in regional Australia. The Murray River water supply carries a high concentration of calcium and magnesium minerals that leave scale deposits inside pipes, fittings, and appliances over time.

In older homes with galvanised steel pipes, scale buildup can significantly narrow the internal diameter of the pipe, restricting flow throughout the property. Copper and plastic pipes are more resistant but still affected at fittings and valves. If your home is more than 20 years old and has never had any pipe work done, scale accumulation could be contributing to your pressure issues.

Could a water leak be dropping your pressure?

A leak anywhere in your supply line will reduce the pressure available at your taps. Hidden leaks, particularly under slab or underground between the meter and the house, often show up as unexplained pressure drops before they become visible as wet patches or rising water bills.

To check for a hidden leak: turn off all taps and appliances that use water, then watch your water meter for 15 minutes. If the dial moves, water is escaping somewhere it should not be. This warrants a call to Brad for water leak detection.

Check the isolation valve first

Before calling anyone, check that the main isolation valve on your property has not been partially closed. This valve is usually located near the water meter at the front of the property or under the kitchen sink. It should be fully open (handle parallel to the pipe). A partially closed valve will drop pressure throughout the whole house and is an easy thing to miss, particularly after maintenance work.

Not sure what is causing your low pressure? Brad will diagnose it and give you a straight answer.

When to call a plumber for low water pressure in Mildura

Try the simple things first: clean aerators and showerheads, check the isolation valve is fully open, and check with Lower Murray Water whether there is a supply issue in your area. If none of those resolve it, the cause is somewhere inside your plumbing system and needs a licensed plumber.

Call Brad if the pressure is low throughout the whole house, if it has dropped suddenly, if your water bill has spiked alongside the pressure drop, or if you cannot identify any obvious cause. These all point to a PRV fault, a leak, or a pipe restriction that needs proper diagnosis.
